Firstly I have to say I'm so glad this day is over! I got really into writing my paper on affirmative action, and ending up writing 8 pages instead of 3 for our report. Even though it was a long process and it wasn't completely necessary, I'm proud of myself. I'm so used to doing the minimum back at home that it's not that often that I get to write in depth about an a particular topic.
Anyways I had a great field trip today. There's going to be a lack of pictures though, because they took away our phones when we entered the courthouse. We got to observe a narcotics trial today and we met District Court Judge Ramos. The narcotics case was somewhat repetitive and a little confusing since we obviously didn't come in at the start of the trial. However, I enjoyed Judge Ramos' open discussion with our class. If there's one word to describe him I'd say it'd be charismatic. He spoke about his humble background and how he wasn't expecting to achieve as much as he did but that he still put out as much effort and showed people that he was trying. What was most inspiring to me though is that he wasn't preaching to us to become lawyers or judges, but to pursue what we are interested in and even if we want a career in a different field of study, then to pursue that as well.
As my trip is coming to a close, I have become even more undecided about what I want to major in. But I don't think that's a bad thing. I now know that I want to go to a college that's going to allow me to explore all my options. I also have a clearer idea of what I want to achieve and who I want to speak to about the ILC when I get back home. I think that a lot of students at my school have it in their mind that the ILC is some sort of vacation. However, it is not for the weak of heart and it is for the independent. Whether a person is shy and soft-spoken, or loud and assertive, doesn't mean that they would have a better or worse experience here. I think that this opportunity would be best presented to people who want to learn something about themselves. I want to write a bit more about this, but right now I'm feeling pretty tired after doing my paper. I'll write a follow-up on this either tomorrow or the day after. Hope you liked my blog. :)
I think it's the best feeling when one let's their excitement for a task drive them to do their best, and that's what it sounds like happened with you and this paper. This is key for excelling in college--to look for that angle on any assignment that gets your adrenaline going and pushes you beyond your limits, but also allows you to enjoy it at the same time!
